Here is the thing about booking a session at Chautauqua Park in Boulder, Colorado in August...you're gambling. The clouds come in over the Flatirons around dinner time like they've got somewhere to be. You either get dumped on...or you get *this*. We got this.

Janae and Thearin showed up ready to walk through the tall golden grass and let Colorado do whatever Colorado wanted. And then - because the state has a flair for the overdramatic - not one, not two, but FIVE full rainbows cracked open over the mountains right as the light went soft and gold. I mean, how lucky was that?!

Why Chautauqua Park is the best spot for Boulder Engagement Photos...

If you've ever driven into Boulder and felt your whole chest go quiet at the sight of those slanted rock faces - that's the Flatirons, and Chautauqua Park is where you stand right at their feet. It's the kind of location that does half the work for you. Wide meadows that turn the color of honey in the late summer. A split-rail fence that looks like it's been leaning there since the 1800s. Wildflowers if the timing is right. And behind all of it? Those granite giants catching the last light. It's why it is one of the most requested spots for engagement photos in Boulder, and why I keep coming back to it.

For Janae and Thearin, we timed it for golden hour and just wandered. No stiff posing, a little hand-holding through the grass,  a lot of laughing in the wind, and of course a very good dip kiss.

Denim, cowboy boots, and knowing exactly who you are.

Can we talk about the styling for a second? Because Janae understood the assignment! A white eyelid dress that moves in the wind, denim - a vest AND a chambray shirt, a suede fringe jacket thrifted for ten dollars, and brown cowboy boots. A felt hat that made an appearance right when the sky got moody. Earthy, a little western, and zero costume energy. It read as them - which is the entire point.

If you take one styling note form this session: pick pieces with movement and texture, keep the palette grounded (creams, denim, warm brown), and wear the thing you actually feel like yourself in. The field will handle the drama. You just have to show up looking like you.

Thinking about your own Chautauqua Park engagement session?

Good. Here is what I'd tell you over coffee.

Go at golden hour.

The hour before sunset is when the meadow lights up and the Flatirons glow. It's worth building the whole evening around.

late summer and fall are unreal.

The grasses turn gold, the light gets long, and the crowds thin out a bit. That said? It's beautiful year round, and I'll help you pick a date and plan!

EMBRACE THE WEATHER.

Some of the best frames from this session exist because a storm was rolling through. Colorado skies are a feature, not a hindrance!

LET ME HANDLE THE LOGISTICS.

Boulder's open space has guidelines for professional photography, and I take care of all that on my end so you two can just be in it.

I am a Boulder and Front Rage engagement photographer based near Castle Rock, and Chautauqua is one of my favorite places on earth to point a camera. If this is the kind of session living in your head - earthy, cinematic, and a little wild - let's make it.
